I've just watched the opening ceremonies for the Beijing Olympics, and I'm not ashamed to say I wept openly. Perhaps it was the splendor and spectacle, or the idea that the nations of Earth can actually put politics, ideology & territorial dispute aside for one week, foregoing combat - virtual and actual - for play.
(This idea, by the way, of a unified planet - good as it seems, actually scare the shit out of bible belters and born agains. Something having to do with the coming of the Antichrist. If anyone can explain it to me without telling me to read the bible, I'm all ears. But I digress.)
The tears started falling for real was when the Chinese team came out, lead by Yao Ming and Lin Hao. Yao Ming you know; Lin Hao you may not. He's the nine year old boy who survived the collapse of his elementary school in Sichaun province earlier this year, reportedly returning to rescue his classmates after crawling out of the rubble. When asked why he went back, he told reporters that he was a class monitor, so it was his responsibility.
Anyway, I was moved.
I was moved in a different way every time the camera glanced over at our own Douchebag in Chief, who seemed not merely bored, but actually annoyed throughout the proceedings, as if he were somehow being imposed upon. Except for when the American team came out, he neither stood nor seemed to clap for any of the other teams. At one point the camera caught him limply slapping a small American flag against his knee for reasons known only to him while Laura sat next to him, unsmiling, looking mostly bored.
Can anyone tell me why George W. Bush is incapable of ever not looking like an asshole? Don't get me wrong - international relations present myriad situations in which presenting the world with a dour mien strengthens one's hand. But this wasn't one of them.
Anyway, I'm off on a tangent. We need a likable President.
On that subject, anyone with digital skills interested in helping me produce a pro-Obama commercial, drop me a line. I've got a treatment worked out.

Me too, I was wondering if you were sorry you were not there...I thought it was spectacular and I know how much that part of the world has meant to you. Anyway...the shrub...looking at his watch...did he have a hot date??? Was he worried the world would not run if he was otherwise occupied? Geeze...
Yes, Josh, do a pro Obama spot...why not...you should see the crap the "born agains"...hey I was born o.k. the first time...are sending around. It is truly sick.
Yeah, I do want a rock star in the white house...I do want someone with charisma...I do want someone who has mega brains...I do want someone who has worked hard, and thought great thoughts and had the experience of listening to other peoples opinions without wanting to kill them...I do want someone "different", with a life time ahead of him so he will be able to appreciate the good he might do.
What I don't want is someone so set in his ways that he can not change...I don't want someone who I might like to have a beer with in my local tavern. You know I don't even go to the local tavern...and if I want a beer, I will have one with someone who likes "elitist" beer. My new fav is Blue Moon with an orange slice.
Hey, Josh, is Texas as Obamaphobic as down here in Southern Delaware??? Or your old hometown of Staten Island???
Oh, as to your question...as I understand it...the next coming...the one that will cause the rapture and return heaven to earth...or whatever...will not happen unless the world is in total chaos...fire and brimstone and all that muck. So if we were actually to achieve world peace...would would not need "the second coming" to achieve world peace...or something like that.
I'm just trying to find anything. NBC isn't available over here. The You Tube channel keeps turning up missing videos. I know Bush is an asshat, but I want to share the experience with you. I want to feel the magic of his asshatness. This is going to be a long two weeks if I can't figure out how to watch the games. On a computer. In Taiwan.
I haven't seen any, boo hoo hoo! I need to find some online streaming on this because we don't have cable. We live in tents and ride camels you know ;) Your post was moving and I will have to see the opening ceremonies now.
I am counting down the days until that jerk is out of office, I think the rest of the world is too. I have never wish bad Karma on anyone until he became president.
are you really that naive? all you can think about is the "douche bag in chief's" appearance(?) yes, he probably was thinking about russia and the conflict in georgia or any other number of situations. bush should never have attended the olympics in the first place, considering the chinese govt's stance toward tibet, etc... The opening ceremony was beautiful, but at the same time sickening. communism shuns the individual. and as to be expected, it's all just a show, the chines govt put on a good show.
they are still a communist regime lacking basic freedoms that would cause a revolt if attempted in america. but you keep on weeping because it sound like that's all you're capable of doing.
we just need a president. likeable or not.
im a little (correction very) disappointed about how the chinese had the "cute" little girl lip-sync sing the song when the then other "chubbier" girl actuallly did. Just apalling. WHY DO IT IF YOU'LL GET CAUGHT. aka having the mere infants compete for womens gymnastics.
ughh....I am SO TIRED OF THE SHITTY comentary. Good god. During the gymnastics and synchro-diving is the absolute worst. Who's side are they on. Constantly praising the cheating Chinese...and belittling the Americans. I AM SO OVER IT. I wish there was a version/channel we could watch without the nonsense filled silences.
go USA!
